Spoilage, damage and waste

Spoilage and waste are ancient problems, but modern producers and shippers still rely on "typical" practices, assumptions about temperature and humidity, and guessing shipment times to predict if enough product quality will be preserved. And some factors, like how much impact or shaking a product receives, or whether it is actually kept "this-side-up," cannot be controlled.

Some products will display obvious signs of spoilage or damage, but many more do not, making it very difficult to detect.

Producers respond with conservative expiration dates and recommendations based on the worst case, which paradoxically causes yet more waste when perfectly usable products are discarded prematurely. This "margin for error" waste can be extremely costly when perishable drugs are the product.

However, without information about the individual product's actual handling history, there is no responsible alternative.
