New regulations worldwide

New government regulations have steadily increased the amount of process control and record keeping that businesses must perform, and apply to smaller and smaller companies who can least afford the additional overhead.

In the US, implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) is underway, requiring all businesses that produce, handle, or sell perishable food to keep auditable records of food conditions and chain-of-custody during every step from production to use.

This end-to-end chain or responsibility highlights the dependencies that producers, shippers, distributors, and sellers have on each other, and the need to verify proper conditions as products continually move through all these stages.
